MAZDA RX-7 driver Ric Shaw claimed the honours for Japanese turbocars with pole position for round two of the 2000 Century Batteries Australian GT Production Car Championship in Adelaide today - but was almost sensationally upstaged by an Aussie V8.
In a one-hour session that ended in darkness on the 3.2 km temporary street circuit, Shaw used the cooling temperature in his engine to set a time of 1 minute 40.55 seconds.
The time came late in the session after V8 Supercar part-timer Tony Scott had claimed provisional pole with a lap of 1:40.76 in a previously unfancied Holden Commodore 5.7-litre ClubSport R8.
A grid of 40 cars competing in five classes will line up for tomorrow's two-hour night race, which will include a compulsory tyre-change pit stop and, for some, a driver change.
Qualifying produced spirited performances throughout the field. The Subaru Impreza of Olympic kayaker Grant Kenny and co-driver Scott Jacob came in sixth, while Footy Show star Sam Newman brought cheers from a crowd of 43,000 with a couple of spins on his way to fourth-in-class in a Holden Vectra.
"When I was on the track the car was great," Newman joked.
Shaw leads the series with 33 points after winning the first round in Western Australia last month.
Tomorrow's race will be shown on Network Ten¹s Trackside on Sunday 16 April. <pre> RESULTS:
