Barbagallo, WA (Sunday, March 19) Rd 1, Race 2 - MAZDA RX7 driver Ric Shaw consolidated an early lead in the Century Batteries Australian GT Production Car Championship with his second win in two days at Barbagallo Raceway, near Perth, today.
After taking the first leg of the first 2000-season round yesterday, Shaw started race two from pole position and led virtually all the way to the chequered flag, also winning the Autobarn High Performance class.
Shaw, from Sydney, heads into round two in Adelaide in three weeks' time with 32 points and an eight-point margin over Robert Hughes, who finished second in both races in his Mitsubishi Lancer RS Evolution V.
The form of the Mazdas, Mitsubishis and newly-eligible Subaru Impreza WRX STi's promises a tight battle for the eight-round national series.
However, the Subaru challenge was not fully realised this weekend after leading driver Scott Jacob failed to score any points. Jacob brought his Subaru home a strong third yesterday, but subsequently was disqualified for a driving infringement, and in today's race retired with electrical problems after one lap.
Jacob's teammate, Olympian and ironman surfing champion Grant Kenny, finished 10th outright in an identical car.
Competitors in the five classes engaged in some of the closest racing.
Melbourne's Kosi Kalaitzidis (Proton M21) fended off Nathan Thomas in a Suzuki Swift GTi to win the Poolrite Four-cylinder Touring class, while David Ratcliff, driving a Toyota Camry, claimed victory in the Pennzoil Six-cylinder Touring class over Robert Chadwick, in a Mitsubishi Magna Sports.
Scott Loadsman took his second V8 Touring class win in a Holden Commodore SS and Peter Boylan drove the promising new Honda Integra Type R to first place in the Hippies Sports Touring class.
