QUEENSLANDER Mark King, driving a Mitsubishi Lancer RS Evolution V, held out Century Batteries Australian GT Production Car Championship leader Ric Shaw for a flag-to-flag win in the first of two round-four races in Canberra today.

Shaw had qualified his Mazda RX-7 on pole position earlier in the day, but Hughes led the 37-car race field away from second spot and was never headed on the 4.0 km temporary street circuit. He won by 2.44 sec.

It was King's second win in this year's series and lifted him from fourth to equal third in the driver's championship. However, Shaw remains the points leader with four wins to his credit.

Third place in today's race went to Gary Deane, having his first outing in a new Subaru Impreza WRX STi.

Officials declared the result of the scheduled six-lap race at the end of lap five, after Sydney driver Scott Loadsman tagged a tyre barrier on the narrow track and rolled his Holden Commodore on the last lap. Loadsman was unhurt and the car will be repaired for tomorrow's second-leg race.

David Wood's Honda Integra was the first non-turbo car, giving him the Hippies Sports Touring class lead.
