BOTH SBR DRIVERS IN TOP FIVE
Stone Brothers Racing's Marcos Ambrose and Russell Ingall are both in the top five after opening day of practice for this weekend's seventh round of the V8 Supercar Championship Series at Queensland Raceway near Ipswich.
Ambrose was second fastest in his Pirtek Falcon behind Mark Skaife, while Ingall was fifth fastest in his Caltex Falcon.
While both comfortable in their cars, both SBR drivers indicated that the track conditions were considerably different to when they tested last Friday.
Both cars were more than a second faster today with cooler weather conditions helping provide more grip.
There will be qualifying and a top 10 shootout tomorrow and a warm-up and a 90-lap race on Sunday.
WHAT THEY HAD TO SAY--..
"The difference in the track conditions between now and when we were out here last Friday is like night and day," said Ambrose.
"On Friday we were flat out doing 11.5s, today we got to a 10.3-second lap. When you consider those times the advantage of testing here go out the window.
"There is no doubt that this series is more competitive than it was last season and that's obvious when you look at the time sheets.
"We have a good record at Queensland Raceway with the last four poles and a round win last year, but that means nothing this weekend.
"We need to be on our game to ensure to maintain our advantage in this year's championship."
"It was all pretty good," said Ingall.
"We were on the pace in the early stages of the session and then really concentrated on race set-up.
"There is no way anyone will be doing low 10s in the race, but we certainly have a car which can set the pace over 90 laps.
"The car is tidy and easy to drive.
"There is no doubt that this round is going to be crucial to the championship chances of everyone towards the top of the championship table, including myself.
"This is a very good start and I have no doubt we can continue the pace in qualifying and then in Sunday's race."
