Brede Makes Lakeside Top Ten In Close Qualifying Session
July 7, 2001 - NRC Racing V8 Supercar driver Dale Brede has qualified 10th for the first of three races to decide Round 5 of the Konica V8 Supercar Series at Queensland's Lakeside circuit.
Battling rear end grip problems for most of the session, Brede set the third fastest lap of the session before the session was red flagged, slipping to ninth overall in the top 50% group. This was despite a quickest lap of 52.7391s, just 0.9785s from the pole position time set by David Parsons (51.7606s), also in a VT Commodore. Brede fell one further spot when NSW driver Garry Holt set a superb lap time of 52.3792s during the second 50% competitor qualifying session.
The sessions were held in fine and sunny conditions, with times tumbling to within 3/10ths of a second of Glenn Seton's V8 Supercar lap record of 51.4452s set in 1997. This is further testimony to the impressive gains made by the Konica class of 2001.
The NRC Racing team has a long night ahead evaluating data acquired to find a faster VT Commodore set up for tomorrow's three sprint races at the undulating 2.4km circuit.
25 year old Brede has a great deal of work has to do in order to gain strong points tomorrow, but he is not alone in this regard with Konica Series hard chargers Michael Simpson, Craig Harris and Leanne Ferrier slotting into the 9th, 8th and 7th grid positions respectively.
"It was a tough session, the track is very bumpy and there are a lot of off camber corners, so with our rear traction problems it was very tough. I didn't think that we would be 10th, but with improvements to the car we could be in line for some strong results tomorrow, particularly in the second race. We will all be putting heaps of effort into it and as we have proven before, we can be very fast after changes made overnight," The Canberra based V8 Supercar driver said. <pre> TOP TEN QUALIFIERS - ROUND FIVE -LAKESIDE
