Bowe And Boatwright Share Gtp Wins In Queensland Raceway Round

AMERICAN V8 and Japanese turbo power shared the wins in round four of the Century Batteries Australian GT Production Car Championship at Queensland Raceway today.

Bowe won the first of two races convincingly from pole position in his V8 Ford Mustang Cobra RA, but in the other could not catch Wayne Boatwright, in a Subaru Impreza WRX STi.

Boatwright possibly was spared from being run down by Bowe when the scheduled 15-lap event was flagged after five laps because of a crash.

In each race, the big Mustang was overwhelmed at the start by the small Japanese turbo four-wheel drives of Boatwright, series leader Brett Peters (Subaru) and defending champion Mark King (Mitsubishi Evo V).

³The Mustang is a bit hard to get off the line, but when it¹s under way it really flies,² Bowe said. ³Still, it¹s the beauty of the GTP category of racing that a Subaru or a Commodore or a Mazda or a Mustang can race so closely and all have a chance of winning,² Bowe said.

The shortened second race meant only half points were awarded toward the championship, but Queenslander Peters remains comfortably in front on 87 points, to 39 for Boatwright and King.

Three drivers - Bowe, Philip Polites (Commodore GTS) and Gary Deane (Subaru) - share the third spot with 38 points each.

Nathan Pilkington (Mitsubishi FTO) took over the lead in the Hippies Sports Touring class from Nathan Thomas (Honda Integra Type R), but it was VW Beetle works driver Tim Leahy who took both class wins today, lifting himself into third spot at the halfway point in the series.

In two separate races for the GT Production division, Sydney¹s Scott Loadsman took both races outright in his new Holden Commodore SS.

In race two, the V8 driver survived an intense attack from Alan Holgersson, in a six-cylinder Toyota Camry. Holgersson was forceds to settle for second place, but had the satisfaction of the fastest lap of the race ahead of several far more powerful cars.

Australian Formula Ford champion Luke Youlden extended his lead in the Poolrite 4-Cylinder Touring class by taking two wins in a Holden Astra.

Organisers announced the three-day attendance at the PROCAR Series event was 13,545. The next PROCAR Series round will be at Eastern Creek, near Sydney, on August 17-19. <pre> CENTURY BATTERIES AUSTRALIAN GT PRODUCTION CAR CHAMPIONSHIP
