QUEENSLAND RACE TWO 11th JUNE 1999
BOYLAN DESTROYS SUBARU WRX IN HORROR CRASH
Class B stalwart Peter Boylan comprehensively destroyed his Subaru Impreza WRX after a dramatic roll-over in race two of round five of the Century Batteries Australian GT Production Car Championship.
Boylan had completed eight laps before he clipped a kerb exiting the in-field loop, spun sideways across the track and rolled several times before coming to rest on its side.
Race officials tried frantically to open the passenger door as fire broke out under the bonnet.
The Sydney driver was unhurt in the incident and demonstrated this to the crowd by standing on the upturned car raising his arms to the crowd.
"The car was coming up on two wheels coming out of the turn and it all went bad once I clipped the kerb," Boylan said.
"The car is not looking very well, but luckily, I am fine.
"I felt it go over at least twice, but some people reckoned it was a lot more.
"It looks like we will have to build a new car for Calder, because I seriously doubt that we will be able to get this one repaired."
Major damage was inflicted to the rear of the car after it landed on its tail, while the right side passenger door on the car was virtually ripped off in the incident.
Points leader Jim Richards took the race victory aboard his Porsche 911 RSCS ahead of Peter Fitzgerald.
Richards made the better start from the front row of the grid, but had to fight back on Fitzgerald who passed him on the final lap.
Domenic Beninca performed strongly to run third in the Meguiar's Class A division for most of the event aboard the Ferrari F355, only to be passed by Geoff Morgan and Ed Aitken on the final lap.
Geoff Full took yet another win aboard in the Autobarn Class B division in his Subaru Impreza WRX ahead of Mark King's Mitsubishi Lancer Evo V.
Peter Phelan bounced back to take the Class C victory, this time holding out the Toyota Camry CSi of David Ratcliff.
Michael Simpson pulled out an astounding performance to finish 10th outright in his BMW 323i. Simpson has been absent for most of the season, but showed he has lost none of his speed.
Phil Kirkham was again successful in Class D, but Melinda Price pulled out her best result to date aboard the Holden Vectra 2.2 GL.
Price fought off a tough challenge from fellow female driver Carol Jackson (Honda Civic VTiR) with Sam Newman in fourth.
Kosi Kalaitzidis took his second win of the day aboard his Proton M21 Coupe, after Nathan Thomas finished in the sandtrap after a clash with Jackson.
