A LUCKY draw - literally - has put V8 Supercar driver Paul Morris on the front row of the starting for the Poolrite V8 BRute Muster at Queensland Raceway tomorrow.
Driving a Holden Commodore SS ute, Morris could do no better than sixth-fastest in qualifying today, but then found himself catapaulted to second on the grid in a draw for starting positions.
"I've been on the front row plenty of times in my career, but never before as a result of a ballot," Morris said.
"It's a novel way to do it but it hardly matters because all the cars are so equal in performance. Still, I'll take the advantage any way I can get it and it will sure make for some action on the track tomorrow."
The draw between drivers put first-time competitor Glenn Gilbert on pole in a Falcon XR8.
Fastest qualifier Gary Young, who set a time of 1 minute 27.42 seconds, was relegated to seventh in the draw, but had the compensation of adding one point to his score in the six-round championship, in which he currently holds ninth position.
"We switched from a Falcon to a Holden for this race meeting and already it's looking like a good move. We've been fastest all weekend so far and with the grid mixed up randomly the way it is, we've got as good a chance as any of getting a good result in the three races tomorrow," Young said.
1. G. Young (Commodore SS) 1:27.42 2. D. White (Falcon XR8) 1:27.57 3. G. MacDonald (Commodore SS) 1:27.58 4. R. Wilson (Commodore SS) 1:28.14 5. G. Denyer (Falcon XR8) 1:28.27 6. P. Morris (Commodore SS) 1:28.37
