Mystery And Crunch For Tasman On NZ Day 1
Tasman Motorsport's Jason Richards and Greg Murphy are 13th and 23rd respectively following a troublesome first practice session for the Placemakers V8 Supercars at Pukekohe Park Raceway in Auckland, New Zealand.
On just his eighth lap out in the #3 MTA Tasman Motorsport Holden VE Commodore, Richards slipped off the track at turn two on dirt brought onto the racing surface by a car in front of him, Richards hitting the tyre barriers, his car needing repairs before it could return to complete the session.
"Our shunt early on created a bit of a drama and I nearly got caught out again later in the session - I think the dirt some [other drivers] are dragging onto the track is going to create a problem this weekend," Richards said.
"As 13th quickest, we're a little bit away with the car - four-tenths - which is close to a bridge jump, but not quite. But it's early days yet and we'll put our heads down overnight to try bridge the gap
Murphy's day was interrupted by a car with an unsettling balance, the four-time Pukekohe winner spending much of the first part of the two-and-a-half hour practice session in the pits with the Tasman Motorsport team searching for a solution.
"We lost the first hour chasing an unhappy feeling with the car, we really don't know what it was, it was something really strange and difficult to pinpoint," Murphy said.
"Losing time meant we got behind and we're now struggling for speed. It's not the start we had hoped for, but we're not giving up - we've got qualifying tomorrow and we'll try find the solution to secure a strong grid spot."
The Holden Racing Team's Todd Kelly was quickest today ahead of Ford's James Courtney and Mark Winterbottom.
Qualifying begins at 12.00pm tomorrow (Saturday) with Race 1 scheduled to start at 4.20pm (Auckland time).
