Round 2, Australian V8 Supercar Championship Series Phillip Island, VIC April 12 -14, 2002.
Strong pre-qualifying performance by Lansvale Racing.
April 12, 2002 - Lansvale Racing V8 Supercar driver Cameron McConville has set the fourth fastest lap time of today's sudden death pre-qualifying session at Victoria's Phillip Island Grand Prix circuit.
McConville was one of thirteen competing to make it into the field for this Sunday's second round of the Australian V8 Supercar Championship. The 28 year old was one of only four drivers to set a lap time within the 1 minute 34 seconds bracket, settling at fourth with a time of 1:34.9488s.
This effort compared to the fastest time of the overcast and dry session set by Paul Radisich in a DJR Falcon of 1:34.110s, second fastest Brad Jones at 1:34.5891s with another Falcon driver at third fastest, Rodney Forbes with a 1:34.8880s lap.
McConville set his time despite running wide on his fastest lap, the Lansvale Racing Team driver sure that there was a couple of tenths lost through this. Despite this, McConville easily made it into the top five ahead of Paul Weel, John Faulkner and Dugal McDougal who have made it through pre-qualifying to compete this round.
Cameron McConville - "I feel fortunate and relieved that we have got through pre-qualifying as the car balance wasn't ideal. We have a fair bit of work ahead of us to get the car right but today's time was very encouraging for the busy weekend ahead."
Chief Engineer, Wally Storey - "We have used today's two sessions to gain as much information as possible and we gained some invaluable data today. I am confident that we can improve the car further for tomorrow."
Paul Morris, Greg Ritter, Matthew White, Cameron McLean, Anthony Tratt and Tomas Mezera were the drivers who did not make it through pre-qualifying and as per current V8 Supercar rules will not be taking part in this round.
