Round 2, Phillip Island (Vic.), 12-14 April
McLean's faster Falcon ready to fly at Phillip Island this weekend.
V.I.P. Pet Foods Racing driver Cameron McLean will tackle round two of the V8 Supercar Championship Series next weekend confident he has a Falcon that will fly faster on the high-speed Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit.
The Brisbane driver says his Paragon Motorsport team has found extra cornering speed after a successful test at Queensland Raceway and he's keen to get into the fray at the island, where lap average speeds top 170 kmh.
"That's going to be really important at Phillip Island, because it's so fast. On shorter, tighter tracks you can use the power to drive around the problem to a certain extent," he said.
"But at Phillip Island you've got 200 kmh corners - you need a good car and a committed driver."
That combination will be put to the test on Friday, when pre-qualifying will sort out which seven drivers from 13 candidates get places in the 32-car field - and which go home.
McLean has just 15 minutes to secure a start in Sunday's two 150 km races.
"I'm not looking forward to that. It's a stressful time, but no question I plan to be in the field when qualifying-proper gets under way on Saturday," he said.
The team tested last Friday at Queensland Raceway - home of September's V.I.P. Pet Foods Queensland 500 - and came up with new suspension settings that noticeably improved the Falcon XR8's times.
"We went down a completely different track with the set-up and were at least half a second faster than we've been before. That doesn't sound like much, but this series is incredibly competitive.
"We struggled with set-up at the grand prix and at the first round in Adelaide, but now the car is as good as we've had it."
The team is hungry for a better result after a frustrating first round in Adelaide last month.
McLean was on course for a top 15 finish in race two when a collision with a slower car bent the Falcon's steering and forced him back to 28th place - the position he now also holds in the series standings with 18 points.
