IRWIN RACING'S ALEX DAVISON JUST MISSED TOP-10 IN OPENING RACE OF THE ISLAND 300
IRWIN Racing's Alex Davison has finished the 21st race of the V8 Supercar Championship Series, the opening event of the Island 300 at Phillip Island, in 11th after a solid drive.
Starting 16th, Davison got a great jump and moved up five spots on the opening lap. He was able to hold his position until pitting for two tyres and 50-litres of fuel on lap #8. Through the pit stop re-shuffle he dropped two spots further back.
Despite fighting oversteer he was able to regain 11th place and hold that through to the chequered flag at the end of 22-lap (100km race).
Tomorrow's schedule includes another qualifying session in the morning, followed by a 200km (44-lap) race in the afternoon.
WHAT ALEX DAVISON HAS TO SAY:
"We got good points and just missed the top-10 but we certainly need to make the IRWIN Racing Ford a lot better for tomorrow. I got a good start and made up some spots on the first lap when everyone was bunched up. When everything settled down we just didn't have the pace to move further forward. I was struggling with oversteer and that causes major tyre degradation. We were not alone as everyone appears to have a similar problem, but we need to work on making sure it affects us less."
WHAT IRWIN RACING ENGINEER WES McDOUGALL HAS TO SAY:
"Alex got a great start and certainly drove very well throughout the race. The IRWIN Racing Falcon is not great, but we are moving forward slowly as we go through the weekend. We certainly have something to work with tonight and aim to give him a better car for qualifying and follow that through into the race. That along with some good work in the pits and some clever strategy should get us a good result at the end of 200km of racing."
