CENTURY BATTERIES AUSTRALIAN GT PRODUCTION CAR CHAMPIONSHIP
PHILLIP ISLAND QUALIFYING 14th May 1999
Former GTP champ and six time Bathurst winner Jim Richards pulled out two barnstorming efforts in qualifying for tomorrow's second round of the Century Batteries Australian GT Production Car Championship at Phillip Island.
With crews greeted by wet, windy and cold conditions, the initial qualifying session for tomorrow's first race was run in mostly wet conditions, while the second session was also slightly damp.
Richards used his experience to grab the Meguiar's Top Marques Class A pole for both events by a considerable margin.
Timing his runs to perfection, Richards was 1.7 seconds faster in the opening session and 1.2 seconds faster in the afternoon.
"We were really on track at the right time, but the car has been improved a lot since Adelaide," Richards said.
"We have done a lot of work on shocks and the engine management system and I am quite pleased with the progress.
"The timesheet is looking pretty daunting but the opposition will be right on my heels tomorrow."
The Porsche 911 RSCSs of Peter Fitzgerald, Domenic Beninca and Ed Aitken swapped places to complete the front two rows.
Wayne Park (Ferrari F355 Challenge) and Jamie Cartwright (Toyota Supra RZ Twin Turbo) swapped places for fourth and fifth - an impressive performance for new-comer Cartwright.
Geoff "Gilligan" Full, again dominated the Autobarn Class B division, easily taking pole position for both races.
Mark King's Mitsubishi Lancer Evo III was second fastest in the opening session with Wayne Vinckx (Nissan 200SX) finishing behind Full in the afternoon.
The Class C honours were shared between the Mitsubishi Magna TH Sports of Robert Chadwick and the Toyota Camry CSi of David Ratcliff - the greasy conditions suiting the front-wheel-drive cars.
Class S was also split with Ric Shaw's Toyota MR2 Bathurst taking the honours in the opening session and the BMW 323i of Wayne Russell taking the upper hand in the afternoon.
Warren Luff pulled out a great performance in his first GTP event aboard the Peugeot 306 Style, in the GTP Lights Class E division.
Luff was fastest in both sessions with the Proton M21 Coupe of Kosi Kalaitzidis right on his tail in both sessions.
Phil Kirkham's Mazda 626 completed a trouble free run in Class D.
