Both Tourism WA and V8 Supercars are confident of renewing the contract to keep the category racing in Western Australia.
The current deal between the West Australian government and V8 Supercars ended following last weekend’s round at Barbagallo Raceway. However, Motorsport.com understands that both parties are keen on a new contract, which would see V8s continue to race at the Wanneroo circuit.
When contacted by Motorsport.com, V8 Supercars confirmed that “discussions have commenced with Tourism WA into renewing the current arrangement,” while the state government’s events department added that talks were positive.
“All we can say at this stage is we are in positive talks with event organisers and confident about the future of the event,” said a Tourism WA spokesperson. “We’re also reviewing this year’s results which will feed into those negotiations.”
Barbagallo Raceway built a new pitlane and corporate area in 2012 to keep the series visiting the long-standing circuit, which has an Australian Touring Car Championship/V8 Supercar history dating back to 1973.
