Morris qualifies for Top 10 Shoot Out
Sirromet Wines Holden Commodore Paul Morris today uncorked his best qualifying performance in two years to secure a position in the Top 10 Shoot Out for tomorrow's fourth round of the V8 Supercar Championship at Winton Raceway.
Morris finished seventh fastest in qualifying today, clocking a best lap time of 1-min 23.475-secs around the 3km circuit in a VY Commodore.
For Morris, it was his best qualifying result in the championship since he started second on the grid in Winton round in 2001.
The performance by the 35-year-old Gold Coast driver earned him a start in tomorrow's Shoot Out, where the top 10 drivers from qualifying will be timed over one lap to determine starting positions on the first five rows of the grid for the 300km race later in the day.
Morris drove a total of 74 laps in the three practice sessions and qualifying at Winton over the past two days. In yesterday's opening practice he was ninth fastest, and he then finished second and ninth in the other two practice sessions today before qualifying.
In the previous round of this year's championship, at Eastern Creek in Sydney earlier this month, Morris qualified 11th and finished a season-best 10th place in the race.
Pirtek Ford Falcon driver Marcos Ambrose was fastest qualifier at Winton today, clocking 1-min 23.260-secs. The top 10 were separated by just 0.344-secs. Less than 1-secs separated the top 28 cars in qualifying lap times.
PAUL MORRIS QUOTES: "Our team has been building up speed and momentum as the season has progressed. At Eastern Creek we just missed the Shoot Out, and here we've gone better and made it. This weekend we've been in the top 10 every session, which proves the car is consistently quick. Importantly our lap times have been quicker every session. We've been working hard on the car set-up in practice and I think we can run a consistent speed on 'old' tyres in the race. My best lap in qualifying was helped by fresh tyres. I had to work pretty hard for the (lap) time, and there wasn't much left in the car or me. As always, the Shoot Out will be a bit of a lottery and hopefully we can improve our position. However, the important thing tomorrow is going to be getting a good, clean run through the first corner. Then we've got to work our way into the race and see what happens."
