Morris disappointed with qualifying.
Sirromet Wines Holden Commodore driver Paul Morris will start from the 12th row of the grid in tomorrow's second round of the V8 Supercar Championship at Victoria's Phillip Island circuit.
Morris' grid position was determined by him finishing 24th in today's qualifying session with a best lap time of 1-min 35.319-secs in his VY Commodore. He set the time on his ninth and final lap around the 4.5km track in qualifying.
The 35-year-old Gold Coast driver had been 11th fastest in yesterday's opening practice session in wet conditions. He missed a large part of today's final practice session, before qualifying, after driving his VY Commodore off the circuit at the Southern Loop/Turn 2.
Morris drove a total of 47 laps in the three practice sessions, plus qualifying, over the past two days. Championship leader Mark Skaife was quickest in qualifying with 1-min 33.688-secs in a Holden Racing Team Commodore. The top 10 drivers in qualifying will contest a one-lap 'Shoot Out' tomorrow before the race to sort grid positions on the first five rows.
PAUL MORRIS QUOTES: "My lap times have been quicker every session, but it's not quick enough because everyone else has also improved. I'm disappointed qualifying so far back because I think we can do much better. The day didn't start well in practice when I had some problems with the front splitter. I ran wide at Turn Two and went into the sand-trap. There wasn't much damage to the car, but we ended up losing about half the session. It was disappointing to miss so much track-time to work on the set-up after yesterday was wet. In race trim I think we'll be more competitive than our qualifying position. The most important thing tomorrow will be to have a right rear tyre that's working at the end of the day. This track is tough on tyres, and 300km will be a big test. The game-plan for the race is to work our way forward, make some good pit-stops, and stay on the lead lap. Hopefully that will produced the type of result I think we're capable of."
