Mclean to start 19th at Winton after impressive qualifying session.
BRISBANE driver Cameron McLean will start his V.I.P. Pet Foods Ford Falcon XR8 from 19th spot for round eight of the V8 Supercar Championship Series after an impressive qualifying performance today at Winton Motor Raceway in Victoria.
McLean's best lap time on the 3.0 kilometre circuit of 1 minute 23.57 seconds, set in the main qualifying session, was just 0.63 seconds behind the mark of pole winner Marcos Ambrose and faster than the fifth-place time set by Greg Murphy in the Top 10 session.
"It's close, as always, but I'd have to say I'm moderately happy even if we didn't get second-fastest like we did last year," McLean said.
The Paragon Motorsport team started off slowly this morning, but suspension changes determined by engineer Matt Boniface achieved an improvement of almost one second per lap in the qualifying session.
Round eight tomorrow will comprise two races of 96 kms (32 laps), the shortest on the 2002 calendar.
"They'll be desperate events because they're so short and Winton provides few places for overtaking.
"I'll have to drive very hard, but it will be important to stay out of the inevitable carnage and to make good fast stops as soon as the pits open.
"Where I finish in race one will be my starting position for race two, so by the end of the day I look forward to being somewhere well ahead of 19th," McLean said.
After tomorrow, the Paragon Motorsport team will start a major preparation program for the championship's two endurance races at Queensland Raceway and Bathurst.
Sydney's Peter Doulman has been appointed co-driver with McLean and the pair will test later this month for the V.I.P. Pet Foods Queensland 500, which will be run at Queensland Raceway on 13-15 September.
