Mclean pulls two 26TH places from torrid Oran Park round.
V.I.P. Pet Foods racing driver Cameron McLean battled through a a tough day at the office to claim two 26th places in round seven of the V8 Supercar Championship Series at Oran Park Raceway, near Sydney, today.
After taking 17th position on the starting grid, the best qualifying performance so far this season for the Paragon Motorsport team, McLean suffered setbacks in both today's 157-kilometre heats, which were won by Mark Skaife.
The races were hot and long - almost 80 minutes each - and despite the Falcon's strong pace, McLean was unable to make headway.
"That was a big day. Oran Park has more direction and elevation changes than most tracks and in today's hot conditions I had my work cut out," he said.
"I wish we could have done better after our ninth place in the previous round, but still I know we're still progressing with our development with every round and will be well and truly in the fight again at Winton next month.
"We now have one eye on the two endurance rounds in September and October and I'm pleased we were able to announce this weekend that we have signed a strong co-driver in Peter Doulman from Sydney."
McLean's troubles started on lap one of race one, when he grazed the concrete safety wall coming on to the main straight.
The hit damaged the wheel nut and locking mechanism and when McLean pitted on lap four for a compulsory tyre change, it took 26 seconds instead of the usual 10 seconds.
Nineteen laps later, he was back in to change a flat-spotted left-front tyre, then had to fight his way back from 32nd spot to 26th at the finish.
The Falcon required considerable work to prepare it for race two.
McLean scraped by with only minor left-wheel damage from a multi-car pile-up on lap three and climbed as high as 19th.
However, a flat tyre on lap 38 forced him into the pits for a second stop. He rejoined in 27th and was 26th at the finish.
