August 12, 2001 - NRC Racing V8 Supercar Team driver Dale Brede has ended his rookie V8 Supercar series on the podium at 3rd overall after the exciting final round of the Konica V8 Supercar Series at Adelaide's Mallala Motorsport Park today.
The 25 year old Canberra driver beat rival David Parsons to finish third overall by a mere two points. Kiwi Simon Wills won the round and the 2001 Konica Series Championship with Victorian Paul Dumbrell second on the day.
The first race saw Brede drive a fast and consistent race, aggressively passing Michael Simpson at the Southern Hairpin after five laps in persuit, then spending the rest of the race closing in on the leaders, Wills and Dumbrell. Brede greeted the chequered flag in 3rd starting a strong day in the NRC Racing VT Commodore.
The fluctuating weather played a major part in the second race, when a heavy downpour following race one saw the circuit still damp in parts for the second race. After an observation lap which saw a number of competitors spin in the tricky conditions, the second race started, but it wasn't long before major chaos took place at turn one. Brede, starting from 8th, was unable to avoid the accident which saw a heavy impact between Owen Kelly and Michael Simpson, Brede colliding with Simpson's sideways Falcon, bending his steering and dropping the NRC Racing driver to the rear of the field.
Brede recovered from the accident to fight on with an evil handling car to finish a points earning 10th, with Wills taking his second win of the day from Kelly and local driver Wallis.
After fast paced panel repairs and an alignment from the NRC Racing crew, Brede started race three from 10th, moving up to 7th in the opening laps, but suffering a spin which relegated him back once again. The Canberra driver continued strongly making up positions as Parsons and Harris collided, then soon after passing Dumbrell to finish fourth behind 3rd placed Leanne Ferrier, 2nd placed Kelly and 1st placed Wills.
Brede's pace was electric at Mallala, the NRC Racing driver setting the second fastest lap of the round (1:09.5145s) posted during the third race. The top four placegetters of race one eclipsed David Besnard's 2000 lap record and of note was the fact that Wills beat the record by over one second, proving without any doubt that the standards set by the Konica V8 Supercar class of 2001 was streets ahead of last season.
This result was Brede's highest of the season and his first podium result despite the potential he has displayed throughout 2001. It was a satisfying way to end his rookie V8 Supercar season and an excellent lead up to NRC Racing's debut at the Bathurst 1000 in October.
"This is a result that the team has deserved all season and if not for the second race incident we would have scored second overall. We had a fast car all weekend and the team has worked hard for this long awaited podium result. I am very happy with the weekend, given that I still managed to finish in the points in race two with a very damaged car. We have proven that NRC Racing can mix it up with the best teams in this category all season - this well deserved result just confirms that further, " Dale Brede said.
Arthur Abrahams, Team Owner - "This has been a great round for us. Dale did a superb job all weekend and the team has to be commended on the fantastic car they presented here at Mallala. We have deserved a podium result many times before and it all came together well today, despite the race two drama which was no fault of Dale's. I congratulate Dale and the boys on a job very well done. Of particular note was our second fastest lap of the round - no-one can deny the speed of the NRC Racing VT Commodore - bring on Bathurst!"
