Nissan still in the dark with tyres

Nissan V8 Supercars drivers James Moffat and Rick Kelly say they are still not sure where they are at after today’s practice session, despite having an extra set of hard tyres to play with.

Moffat was second fastest in today’s second hour-long session, clearly the best of the Nissan Altimas, having set his quickest time on a good used set of soft tyres left over from Tasmania.

However, he was quick to play down his pace.

“What it all means is probably not much, because we have to qualify on the hard tyre,” he said.

“We’ve got a bit of work to do on the hard.”

Kelly, who was 14th in both sessions, also question whether much could be taken from qualifying given that there was a mixture of compounds on-track.

“It’s pretty comical that they give everyone a new set of tyres so that they know where they are at, but they still let us use softs, so we don’t really know where anyone’s at,” he said. “It’s pretty funny.”

“It’s good to have some new tyres, we’ve still got a bit of work to do. We’ve got a little bit of stuff under brakes which we need to tidy up, which will unlock a fair bit of pace for us.”
