TWO-time GTP champion Jim Richards surged to the lead in the 2000 Century Batteries GTP Nations Cup with a typically strong performance aboard his Porsche GT3 in round four at Queensland Raceway today.
After a two-day lead-up which saw him relegated unusually to sixth on the starting grid, Richards scored two second-place finishes to overtake Ferrari's Mark Noske in the standings.
"We're very happy. We've come away with 24 points, the championship lead and not a mark on the car," Richards said.
Noske suffered the first real setback in the championship he had led since the first round, failing to finish race one after a collision with Peter Fitzgerald and in race two coming home fifth after starting from the back of the grid.
Race one went to Wayne Park, who delivered the first win for his Ross Palmer Motorsport team Ferrari F360 Modena Challenge.
In race two, Paul Stokell used the power of his V12-engined Lamborghini Diablo to take Park and then Richards within two laps of the start. He won the race by two seconds from Richards, moving from fourth to third in the title standings.
Other good performances came from Geoff Morgan, the continuing development of his Dodge Viper ACR paying dividends with fifth and fourth places, and world champion Alan Jones' son Christian, who finished fourth and sixth in his first race in a Prancing Horse team Ferrari.
This weekend's races in the Century Batteries GTP Nations Cup will be shown on Trackside on Network Ten throughout Australia on Sunday, July 23, from 3 pm.
