Mostert takes provisional pole for the Sandown 500

Chaz Mostert bagged provisional pole for the Sandown 500, holding out Prodrive team-mate Mark Winterbottom.

The pole fight came down to a three-way fight between Mostert, Winterbottom, and Jamie Whincup, the trio trading blows for much of the second half of the 20-minute session.

And when it came to the business end of the session, the all-important final two-lap stint, Mostert again came up with the goods, a 1m08.716s leaving him a hefty 0.19s clear of Winterbottom.

Whincup wound up third fastest, with Lee Holdsworth giving Frenchman Sebastien Bourdais a good starting spot for today’s first qualifying race with the fourth fastest time.

David Reynolds was fifth fastest, Fabian Coulthard sixth, and Shane van Gisbergen seventh.

Scott McLaughlin gave Volvo a Top 10 spot with P9, while Erebus V8’s tough weekend continued with Will Davison just 17th.

The real surprise of the session was Craig Lowndes, who managed just 16th in the Triple Eight Commodore.

There will now be two qualifying races – one for co-drivers and one for main drivers – the results of which will shape the grid for tomorrow’s Sandown 500.
