McLaughlin stars in Shootout to take pole

Volvo driver Scott McLaughlin will start this afternoon’s V8 Supercars race in Townsville from pole position, after starring in the Top 10 Shootout.

The Kiwi ran four cars from the end, setting up his 1m13.411s lap with a stunning first sector.

The three Prodrive cars did their best to hunt McLaughlin down, Chaz Mostert even besting McLaughlin in the second sector of his run, but ultimately they were powerless to stop the Volvo driver from taking his first pole of 2015.

“That’s awesome,” McLaughlin said.

“The boys gave me a great car, and we had a good strategy for that Shootout.”

Mostert ended up second, exactly where he qualified this morning, and blamed a small mistake for not grabbing pole.

“I made a mistake at Turn 6 that probably cost pole,” he said. “We’ll give a good crack this arvo.”

Shane van Gisbergen improved from sixth in qualifying to P3 in the Shootout, ahead of Prodrive pair David Reynolds and provisional pole-sitter Mark Winterbottom, who both lost spots compared to qualifying this morning.

Fabian Coulthard lost a spot as well, dropping from fifth to sixth, while Andre Heimgartner starred in his first-ever Shootout appearance, improving from P9 in qualifying to P7 on the grid.

Todd Kelly was eight in the one-lap dash, Lee Holdsworth ninth, and Will Davison 10th.
