Stone Brothers Racing's Marcos Ambrose was second fastest in unofficial practice for the third round of the V8 Supercar Championship Series at Eastern Creek Raceway in Sydney today.

Ambrose was piped in the closing seconds of 35-minute session by Garth Tander, but believes there is a "bit left" in his Pirtek Falcon despite his provisional front-row effort today.

"That was a pretty good start," said Ambrose.

"The car is hard to drive at this stage, so we need to work on that.

"We have good outright speed, but we just need to make it more comfortable and nicer to drive.

"We did about four really solid laps in a row, so it is also consistent at this stage.

"We will work on a few things overnight and get into the serious stuff tomorrow."

Ambrose's Stone Brothers Racing teammate Russell Ingall was eighth quickest today in his Caltex Havoline Ford.

"We ran a different set-up to Marcos and did not have as much speed," said Ingall.

"We will make a few changes overnight and will try and drag some more out of it before tomorrow's qualifying and the top 10 shootout.

"While qualifying is important, race set-up is going to be vital with a 300km race around here on Sunday."

It was a solid day for Stone Brothers Racing who earlier had Mark Winterbottom take pole position for the third round of the Konica V8 Supercar Championship Series.
