QUEENSLAND driver Mark King set out to wrap up the Century Batteries Australian GT Production Car Championship in style by claiming a decisive pole position in qualifying today for the final round at Sandown International Raceway, Melbourne.

King, the series points leader, dodged rain showers and heavy traffic to put his Mitsubishi Lancer RS Evo V around the 3.1 km circuit in 1 minute 28.42 seconds, more than two sec. faster than his nearest rival.

The wet track ensured all-wheel-drive cars took the top four grid spots for the first of tomorrow's two 12-lap races, with the fancied 400 hp Holden Commodore GTS of Ed Aitken almost 3.5 sec. off the pole time.

"My plan tomorrow is to keep it straight and hopefully come home with my first champioship," King said.

The point earned for pole position also consolidated King¹' leadership of the Autobarn High Performance class. Fellow class leaders David Wood (Honda Integra, Hippies Sports Touring) and Daryl Coon (Ford Falcon XR6, Pennzoil 6-Cylinder Touring) also claimed class pole positions.

James Philip won pole in the Pennzoil V8 Touring class in a Ford Falcon XR8 and Warren Luff, driving a Peugeot 306, was fastest in the Poolrite 4-Cylinder Touring class.
