Craig Lowndes says Mark Winterbottom should still be considered the overwhelming favourite to win the V8 Supercars title, despite the gap dropping to 179 points this weekend.
Lowndes had the better of the running this weekend, beating Winterbottom in all three races and bringing the gap down to 179 – with 300 on offer at the season finale in Homebush in two weeks.
But while Lowndes has the form, he says it is still Winterbottom’s title to lose.
“It really is a championship for [Winterbottom] to lose; with a 179-point lead, as long as he drives smart and clean and keeps out of trouble, he should have enough of a points gap to walk away with the #1.
“But we won’t stop fighting until the chequered flag on Sunday.”
Saturday key to title fight
According to Lowndes, the crucial day at Homebush will be Saturday, where he will have to bring the gap down to below 150 points to be in with a chance on the final day of the season.
“To be honest, it all depends on Saturday’s race [in Sydney],” said Lowndes.
“Every race that goes on from here on in, if we can get it below 150 then we’re still a chance for Sunday.”
