September 14, 2002 - Lansvale Racing V8 Supercar team Holden VX Commodore drivers Cameron McConville and Warren Luff will start from the 19th spot on tomorrow's starting grid for the 2002 VIP Petfoods Queensland 500.
The frantic 25 minute qualifying session was held in warm conditions, the increased track temperature playing an important part in the fastest lap times set by all 35 V8 Supercars in the bumper field.
McConville made the most from a number of major handling changes made to the car after the morning session, to post the 16th fastest lap and his fastest of the weekend (1:11.5477s) with three minutes remaining in the session. He then marginally improved his time to 1:11.5464s, but the closing moments saw a rush of competitive final lap times that pushed the LRT driver to 19th overall.
McConville's lap time was a mere 0.75 seconds from today's fastest lap set by Falcon driver Marcos Ambrose, once again reflecting the super-competitive nature of the V8 Supercar Series.
Cameron McConville - "I was happy with the pace of our car during qualifying because we struggled quite a bit in practice today. We nearly made the top fifteen shootout and to miss out by less then a tenth of a second is a little bit frustrating. The positive part is that the overall balance of the LRT Commodore improved in qualifying. We will be trying a more conservative race package in the warm up tomorrow to look after the rear tyres, which will be critical for a strong result."
McConville qualified ahead of Holden Racing Team driver Tomas Mezera, Kiwi Racing's Jason Richards and Shell Helix Racing driver Greg Ritter and 00 Motorsport Falcon driver Craig Lowndes.
McConville's co-driver Warren Luff also lapped the Queensland Raceway circuit faster then yesterday and is feeling very confident with the team's race package.
Warren Luff - "I was able to push a bit harder today and work on putting together some race pace laps. The overall balance of the car has improved and this makes us well prepared for the long race tomorrow."
Marcus Ambrose set the fastest time of the qualifying session in his SBR Falcon, 1:10.7937, 8/1000ths of a second ahead of team mate David Besnard with HRT driver Jason Bright third. Max Wilson, Greg Murphy and John Bowe along with the remainder of the top fifteen drivers will sort out their grid positions in the top fifteen shootout scheduled for 3:15pm today.
Tomorrow's V8 Supercar action at Queensland Raceway starts with a warm up at 10:30am, followed by the 161 lap VIP Petfoods Queensland 500 at 1:00pm.
