McConville & Luff ready for the Queensland 500.
September 10, 2002 - Sydney's Lansvale Racing Team heads to Queensland Raceway this weekend for the first of two double-points earning endurance races this season, the VIP Petfoods Queensland 500.
The team welcomes 26 year old Warren Luff in his V8 Supercar enduro debut with Cameron McConville (28) in the LRT VX Commodore. Luff has enjoyed significant success in numerous categories to date and hopes to add a strong result at the VIP Petfoods Queensland 500 to his impressive CV this weekend.
"I'm very excited to have this opportunity and I am looking forward to it. Our race pace is always strong and we have completed a great deal of testing leading up to this race, so I have every reason to believe that we are in for a strong showing. I feel very comfortable with the car and I intend to do the best that I can for Cameron and the team," Luff said.
McConville has continued his relentless fitness regime during the past month that included a fleeting cycling visit to northern Italy, where the LRT driver covered some 500 kilometres through the rugged Dolomite Alps in five days.
There is no doubt that with improved reliability and speed, McConville and Luff will be competing for a possible top ten finish this Sunday.
"I have been looking forward to the Queensland 500 as we have a strong record in endurance racing events. We traditionally have a strong race car and last year the Lansvale Commodore was one of the best racing cars that I have ever driven. It was just our bad qualifying result that got us involved in a number of incidents that destroyed any chance of a strong result. We know that our race pace can be as good as the best of them - now our qualifying has to follow suit so we can avoid any carnage during the opening laps of this long race," McConville said.
"Warren Luff has completed many laps in the car to date and he has impressed us all. This weekend will be excellent experience for him as nothing beats actual race laps for practice leading up to Bathurst. Our goal in Queensland is to finish in the top ten - and with good reliability that is exactly what we intend to do," He added.
The Lansvale Racing Team took their last opportunity to test a host of endurance race performance improvements yesterday (Monday September 9) at Sydney's Oran Park Raceway. The team was able to test a number of new components in endurance race trim, reporting significant power and handling improvements.
This Sunday's VIP Petfoods Queensland 500 heads up the endurance racing component of the Australian V8 Supercar Championship Series, this event preceding the Bob Jane T-Marts 1000 at Mount Panorama in Bathurst (NSW) on October 13.
The weekend's action will see McConville and Luff on the track on Friday and Saturday for practice and qualifying, with a gruelling 500 kilometres of fierce V8 Supercar race driving awaiting the duo on Sunday.
