Shattering experience for Luff.
Driving instructor and motivator Ian Luff has had a lucky escape during qualifying for round one of the Australian Production Car Championship in Adelaide at the Clipsal 500 meeting. At the fastest corner on the Adelaide Street Circuit, the left rear wheel shattered with fragments imbedding and blowing the tyre as well as shattering the disc rotor.
"It was one of the scariest moments of my life, I thought the car would roll at one point, or at least smack the concrete wall," he said, inspecting the damage after the car was retrieved and returned to the pits. "It was probably the worst place it could have happened as I was flat-out in fourth gear."
Fortunate too as Luff had already managed a respectable time which makes him third fastest of the Class B cars. "We are only eight hundredths of a second off the next car and I thought there was more pace in it," he added. "We are a session behind our rivals as a fuel problem kept us out of yesterday's initial practice outing.
The Australian Production Car Championship is a multi-class series in which Luff has qualified sixth overall. Like all rounds, the Eagle Boys round one heats will feature handicap starts with the smaller-engined Class D starting first, then the sporty Class B and lastly, the V8s of Class A.
GET WELL SOON DAD
There in an unusual co-incidence pertaining to the Formica Honda Integra Type R contesting the opening round of the Australian Production Car Championship in Adelaide at this weekend's Clipsal 500.
Bill Luff, father of driver Ian, and car owner Len Cave, father of Jason Cave who is looking after the car preparation, have both suffered major heart related health problems recently.
The latter has just undergone heart surgery and is recovering after being released from hospital whilst Bill Luff is in intensive car after suffering a stroke. The Formica Honda Integra Type R carries across its front the message "Get well soon Dad."
