Australia - Holden and Skaife on line for title.
GM/Holden relinquished its unbeaten run of victories in Australia's Supercar championship at the weekend after arch rival Ford scored its first win in 19 rounds to take success at Sandown, with GM/Holden factory team, HRT, holding out to secure third place on the podium.
GM/Holden managed two seconds and two thirds over the three-sprint meet, all taken by HRT drivers, Mark Skaife and Craig Lowndes. Despite the Sandown disappointment, Skaife, who is set to take the championship needing a minimum of points in November's double-points season finale Bathurst 1000, took third overall for the weekend.
Celebrating his first round win ever was Ford driver Paul Radisich who took two of the three heats with team mate Steven Ellery securing second overall from a race win and two seconds.
The usual strength of Holden contenders was hampered by a series of race-ending incidents. Russell Ingall's Castrol Commodore recorded a DNF in the first sprint when he was shunted from behind causing a forward collision with Tony Longhurst that resulted in broken steering. The following heat saw team mate Larry Perkins hit from behind by fellow Holden 'Team of Champions' member, Steven Richards, excluding both competitors from race two. Perkins also missed the final heat due to the damage inflicted.
Competitors now head to Mt Panorama on November 18-19th for the Bathurst 1000 endurance classic. Holden is assured of a championship victory with the top three drivers all piloting Commodores.
