McLean says top-end horsepower's the key for top end assault on V8 Supercar Series.

BRISBANE V8 Supercar driver Cameron McLean will run a special engine tuned for maximum speed in his V.I.P. Pet Foods Ford Falcon XR8 for round four of the championship in Darwin next weekend.

A 280 kmh straight dominates the Northern Territory capital's Hidden Valley circuit and McLean says straight-line performance - and powerful brakes - will be prerequisites for a good result.

"We've spent a lot of time since the last round in Sydney preparing an engine to give its best at high speed - I guess you could say we'll have a strong top end for the Top End race," he said today.

The car and engine are now aboard the V.I.P. Pet Foods race transporter - lauded as one of the most spectacular in the series - on its way to Darwin to join a convoy of rigs into the circuit on Thursday.

With the end of pre-qualifying and the certainty of a start in Saturday's twilight 20-lapper and two 35-lap feature races on Sunday, McLean and his Paragon Motorsport team are aiming to continue their improving form.

"The pace we discovered in the last race at Eastern Creek was fantastic and we're making some real progress with our new Falcon," he said.

"We went well in Darwin last year - our best placing was 10th - and that's got to be our goal again next weekend.

"Darwin is a great place for the V8 Supercar Championship to visit and Hidden Valley is a great track to race on.

"You need big horsepower and big brakes. The straight is 1.1 kilometres long and you have to really manhandle the car around the slow corners at each end.

"There are some good overtaking spots too, so I predict the Territory fans are going to enjoy some sensational V8 Supercar racing."
