Bargwanna Back in The Championship Top Ten
Orrcon Racing driver Jason Bargwanna continued his good form in the V8 Supercar Championship today in the final day of the fourth round of the Championship at Darwin's Hidden Valley Raceway finishing 11th overall for the round.
Bargwanna's Orrcon Racing teammate Mark Winterbottom finished three spots further back in 14th overall for the round.
In the opening race today Bargwanna hit the lead on lap nine before pitting for his compulsory pit stop for tyres and rejoining the field in 15th on the 2.9km Hidden Valley layout.
Both drivers steadily climbed up the order with Bargwanna holding down ninth and Winterbottom 12th while engaging in a battle with Paul Weel and Mark Skaife.
Over the closing stages Bargwanna steered clear of an incident between Paul Radisich and Garth Tander to pick up seventh as Winterbottom earned his maiden top ten finish in the Championship.
The Orrcon Racing team was the only Ford team to have both cars inside the top 10.
Following the race Winterbottom suffered from heat exhaustion spending the two hours between races cooling down with his feet in ice and drinking almost two litres of water re-hydrating his body.
"I really suffered from the heat once I stopped, during the race I really didn't notice it that much but once I hopped out of the car I realized how hot it really was," said Winterbottom.
During the final race both drivers continued to be amongst the thick of the action with Bargwanna earning his third top ten round result for the year. Winterbottom finished 12th for the round, a career best finish.
"We made steady progress all weekend and we never outside the top 15 which is great especially considering it is my first time here," said Winterbottom.
"The second race today I was a lot more prepared fore the heat and the guys were able to give me more ventilation in the car.
"To finish 14th is very pleasing and a great result for the effort that they guys have put in leading up to and over the weekend."
Winterbottom's 14th for the round elevated him to 18th in the Championship with Bargwanna back inside the top 10 in ninth.
"The weekend had some very positive signs with good race and qualifying pace," said Bargwanna.
"We are now playing with the big boys but there is still some areas that we need to work on. A podium was there to be had today and it proves that we have the pace to be right up the pointy end of the field."
The round was won by Todd Kelly followed by Steven Richards and Russell Ingall. Richards now leads the Championship on 704 points ahead of Marcos Ambrose on 694 and Greg Murphy (665).
The next round of the Championship will be held at Perth's Barbagallo circuit on June 11-13.
