ALEXANDER DOWNER GETS THE RIDE OF HIS LIFE

Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer had the experience of a lifetime at more than 260km per hour at the SkyCity V8 Supercars in Darwin today as a passenger with Caltex Racing's Russell Ingall.

Minister Downer is a huge fan of the series and is reportedly the only current sitting politician to hold a CAMS racing licence and has even recently bought a race car that he drives in Adelaide.

He attended the first day of the Darwin V8 Supercar Championship Series event where he was blown away by the ride with Ingall and the phenomenal growth of the V8 Supercar Championship Series.

"It was absolutely exhilarating, unbelievable," Minister Downer said.

"The sheer acceleration, braking power and manoeuvrability of these cars is incredible. It was one of the best things I have ever done in my life. And this sport of V8 Supercars -- what a great success story it is.

"And Russell is just a fantastic guy and a brilliant driver. It was a privilege to be in the seat next to him."

It was an equally pleasing experience for Ingall.

"I guess Alexander is used to being in high pressure environments like this. I really think he enjoyed the experience," Ingall said.

"It's always great to take people such as Alexander for a ride at more than 260km per hour because he has a genuine passion for the sport and an understanding of what it's all about.

"After the general press conference today and some of the questions he was asked I was glad he has his job and I have mine. Although he may now be ready to swap."
