COURIER MAIL GTP CLASSIC - OCTOBER 15 - 18
HONDA INDY RACE TWO 18th SEPTEMBER 1998
FIRST CORNER DRAMA HANDS FORBES VICTORY
A first corner drama virtually handed victory to NSW driver Rodney Forbes after Jim Richards and Ross Almond were elimated in The Courier Mail GTP Classic on the streets of Surfers Paradise at the 1998 Honda Indy today.
The trio plus Ferrari F355 Challenge driver Darren Palmer were caught out at the first chicane when Almond locked a brake and slid into the back of Richards.
Palmer also took evading action across the grass to avoid the drama.
Richards accidentally bypassed the chicane after the impact from Almond, yet he was called in for a stop-go penalty.
His race however, ended one lap later with a broken exhaust caused by the incident.
"Everybody arrived at the first turn off the richter scale and I just tried to avoid the mess," Forbes said.
"There were cars going everywhere but luckily I didn't get caught up in it."
Richards was disappointed to be unable to continue his battle from yesterday abaord his Porsche 911 RSCS.
"It certainly was disappointing, especially to get the stop-go penalty but with the broken exhaust, it didn't really matter in the finish," Richards said.
"It was bad luck for me that Ross made a mistake but I am more disappointed not to be out there racing rather than worrying about the damage."
John Teulan grabbed fourth in his GTP debut aboard his Nissan Skyline GT-R Mark King pulled off an amazing 5th outright place in his Class B Mitsubishi Lancer Evo III. Scott Jacob climbed aboard his Subaru Impreza WRX he shared with Grant Kenny to grab second place in Class B.
David Ratcliff continued his winning ways in Class C aboard his Toyota Camry CSi, leading home the Holden Commodore VS SS of Mark Cohen and the Ford Falcon XR6 of Chris Sexton.
