Newcastle's Motorsport Talent to Join Forces
Young Novocastrian Drew Russell has been signed by Newcastle's own V8 Supercar team, Race Image to fight out the 2009 Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series.
The 20 year old's outstanding performance throughout the 2008 season attracted the attention of Race Image's team manager, David McMahon.
"I've known Drew for a while and have been impressed with what I have seen, but his performance last year was outstanding," said David.
"Drew drove faultlessly all year, keeping out of trouble whilst running well above where the car he was in should have been.
"Particularly impressive was his top 8 finish at Wakefield Park, but it was his top ten finish in the final race of the year that made me 100 per cent sure I wanted him in our car for the 2009 season.
"Drew is a talented driver who is mature beyond his years. He is able to get the most out of his car, working his way through the field and holding his position.
"From what I saw in 2008, Drew is able to bring the car home with minimal damage which for a team owner is an attractive quality.
"I am looking forward to running a true Novocastrian team combining the expertise of Race Image and Drew's talent to leave our mark on the 2009 Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series," said David.
"2009 will be an exciting year for Race Image with the opening of our suspension and tuning workshop as well as our racing commitments.
"We also have a number of attractive sponsorship opportunities available with the Team and anyone interested in supporting Race Image and Drew should contact the Team Manager on the details below," said David.
Drew is relishing the opportunity of joining Race Image and having a car capable of running comfortably in the top 10.
"To be signed by Race Image is very exciting," said Drew.
"Running with Novocastrian Motorsport has been a fantastic development process, but to make the next step I needed to move to a more established team; one that has greater resources and the ability to provide me with a car capable of challenging for podium finishes.
"To go into the start of the season knowing I am here for the whole year is a bit of a novelty after going from race to race last year, regularly scraping together the funding at the last minute.
"In fact the deal that got us on the grid at Clipsal last year came together just days before the round.
"Signing this deal two months before the start of the season allows me to be in top condition both mentally and physically before the Clipsal 500 in March and I can't wait!"
Drew's move will see him switch manufacturers from his Commodore VZ to Race Images #60 Falcon that has been upgraded to a BF.
The car Drew will be running is an ex DJR car that ran in the main game in 2003 and he will get his first run in his new car during the team's test day early March.
Drew will continue to run Go Karts Go sponsorship in the 2009 season.
