Akermanis Confesses Need For Speed
Brisbane Lions AFL Premiership player and Brownlow medallist, Jason Akermanis, is getting excited about a victory of a different kind after being confirmed as the Hot Wheels celebrity driver for the Sandown V8 Ultimate from 30 November to 2 December.
A self confessed 'petrol-head', Jason enthusiastically accepted the invitation to fill the role which will see him receive some on track driving tips from the best V8 Supercar team in the country, the Holden Racing Team, with their drivers showing him the ropes.
"My uncles were mechanics so cars and bikes and speed are sort of in the blood, I love it. I've been out on the motorbike for the odd open track day, but I'm no pro. If I can get through the weekend on one crash a day I will be happy," joked Akermanis as he warmed up with a miniature version of the car he will drive at the event.
Jason Bright will give him some handy lessons on each day of the meeting in the race-kitted Hot Wheels Commodore before newly crowned 2001 Shell Series champion, Mark Skaife, takes him for the ride of his life as a passenger in the number one HRT race car.
"It's great to share something like this with another elite sportsman and there are a couple of good fast corners at Sandown so we will be getting him right into it," said Skaife. "It's pretty much world's apart from what he normally does so I'll be trying to give him a ride he will really enjoy."
"I normally miss all the Shell Series rounds because we are playing footy, so it will be great just to see these guys in action," said Akermanis. "It makes sense for me to be with the HRT guys after the winning year I have had with the Brisbane Lions. You should always stick with the best I say."
