VICTORIAN driver Peter Fitzgerald literally talked his Porsche GT3 into a sensational pole position time for the QR Citytrain GTP Nations Cup at the Gold Coast Indy today.

Fitzgerald was the fastest of 10 drivers who broke the lap record for the 4.5 km street circuit. Ferrari's Mark Noske was second fastest, while last year's pole and race winner Jim Richards, in another Porsche, was third.

Fitzgerald's time of 2 minutes 0.03 seconds, on the final lap of a half-hour qualifying session, was more than five seconds under the 1999 race lap record and displaced a surprised Noske, who had believed until then he was comfortably on the first spot.

"I went out late in the session and found I had the track all to myself. I was aggressive without being untidy and urged the car on," Fitzgerald said.

"Coming down the straight I was saying 'come on baby, come on baby' and when the time came up I couldn't believe it,2 Fitzgerald said.

Noske said the lap that had earned him provisional pole was the best he'd ever driven.

"I was pretty out of control, but it was a perfect lap. I thought no one could beat it and then Fitzy went out and knocked me off at the very last minute."

Races tomorrow, Saturday and Sunday will earn points for the seventh round of the Century Batteries GTP Nations Cup, which Richards leads with 155 points to 11' for Noske in second.
