Winton, Round 10-Qualifying

The new Super Cheap Auto AU proved it will be a contender for the lead for the big upcoming championship races today, when driver Steve Ellery qualified the unraced car well inside the top ten at Victoria's Winton Raceway.

In a wet and slippery qualifying session, the Super Cheap Auto team picked the weather changes perfectly, slotting on slick tyres with just 4 minutes in the session remaining.

Ellery grabbed two fast laps and the well-timed move elevated him from 20th position to 2nd overall, where he was then bumbed to 7th at the end of the session and the third Ford overall.

"We played the conditions well, and other teams you'd expect to be up the front got caught out. I'm pleased we've got it right at this track. The team's been working hard to make qualifying happen for a while and at a track like Winton, starting up the front will be a huge advantage."

"Pleased? Yeah, no question. You always take a bit of a gamble when you debut a new car especially in conditions like we had today. There was hail there at one stage and when you have people flying off the track and so many red flags in one session it can be a lottery to get a good qualifying spot," Ellery explained.

In the shootout, Ellery scored the 7th fastest time and says the only disappointment of the day was not quite getting a perfect fast lap and losing .04 of a second around the back of the track.

He estimated the error cost him three grid positions but says 7th ,alongside Greg Murphy, will be a good place to start the first of the two 32 lap races.

Tomorrow's weather conditions promise to be as unpredictable as they were during today's qualifying. Ellery says he's prepared for anything on track and says he's already proved he can be fast in wet and dry conditions. <pre>
