Lowndes quickest at flooded Creek
TeamVodafone's Craig Lowndes has posted the quickest time in today's rain affected V8 Supercar practice at Sydney's Eastern Creek Raceway.
After lengthy delays waiting for excess water to disperse from sections of the 3.9km circuit, the V8 Supercars finally hit the track at 3.00pm in wet conditions and both TeamVodafone drivers were able to quickly come to grips with the slippery track.
The rain lifted midway through the first half of the limited laps practice session and as the track started to dry out, Lowndes made a bold call to be the first driver to move to slick tyres.
After some of nervous laps, Lowndes began to reduce his times and with only minutes left in the first half of the session, he posted his fastest time of 1.38.6954, a second quicker than his closest rival Garth Tander.
"I was delighted with the car setup from the beginning," Lowndes said. "It was very good in both wet and dry conditions."
"The conditions were constantly changing today which required a little bit of patience, but we did manage to get the best out of the car in the varying conditions."
"I am confident with the car in both wet and dry. Let's see what tomorrow brings," he added.
Teammate Jamie Whincup said he was confident of improving his times after finishing 11th quickest today.
"It was actually good fun out there today," Whincup said "Flying from a. wet track to a dry track made it very interesting .
"A fast time today was all about being on the track at the right time, which didn't quite happen for me."
"Our time certainly doesn't justify our speed, we will make sure we perform when it counts tomorrow," Whincup added.
Tomorrows on-track action will see the V8 Supercars qualify at 11.00am with the first of three 31-lap races scheduled to get underway at 1.40pm.
