McLean puts V.I.P. Falcon on V8 Supercar grid.
BRISBANE driver Cameron McLean survived one of the most nerve-wracking experiences of his racing career to take his V.I.P. Pet Foods Falcon successfully through pre-qualifying today for round three of the V8 Supercar Championship Series at Eastern Creek Raceway, near Sydney.
After topping a field of 13 cars in official practice, McLean was seventh in the sudden-death pre-qualifying - but only after enduring a tense wait for the 15 minute session to end.
"It was unbelieveably close and everybody had sheep stations riding on the result. I went out and did my best time on new tyres and then just had to sit in the pits and hope nobody went better in the final minutes," McLean said.
In the end, his time of 1 minute 33.574 seconds was just three-thousandths behind the Falcon of Mark Larkham. A further three-hundredths farther back, Paul Romano was one of six drivers - including Wayne Gardner and Paul Morri - who did not make the cut for this weekend's three races.
"That's a huge hurdle out of the way and a great result for our sponsors and the team. We made some changes to the V.I.P. Pet Foods Falcon that got us on the pace and I know there's more speed to come this weekend as we get track time," McLean said.
"Now we can get our teeth into the championship."
