Round 3, Australian V8 Supercar Championship - Eastern Creek NSW. April 26-28, 2002.
McConville powers Sydney's V8 Supercar team to 5th in high pressure pre-qualifying session.
April 26, 2002 - Sydney's only V8 Supercar team has once again defiantly made it through sudden death pre-qualifying at Eastern Creek Raceway this afternoon in warm (29C) and humid conditions.
The ultra high pressure 15 minute session started at 2:05pm with 13 competitors fighting for the 7 places available to part in the round. Lansvale Racing Team VX Commodore driver Cameron McConville was in strong form throughout, initially posting the second fastest time of the session after a quick pit stop for new tyres.
McConville then remained as consistent as possible, lapping within 5/10ths of a second of the fastest drivers, Glenn Seton and Brad Jones, settling in at 5th for the majority of the session, 3/100ths of a second behind DJR Falcon driver Greg Ritter and 2/100ths of a second ahead of Falcon drivers Mark Larkham and Cameron McLean who made up the seven qualifiers. McConville was also the only Holden driver to make it through pre-qualifying.
The weaknesses of the pre-qualifying system were once again exposed here at Eastern Creek with 2001 Calder Park round winner Paul Morris excluded from his second race in a row, along with former 500cc World Champion Wayne Gardner, Paul Romano, Anthony Tratt (also a double non-qualifier), Dugal McDougall and Steve Owen.
Cameron McConville - "I'm relieved to make it through pre-qualifying once again, but it has added another ten years to my life! - It is a ridiculous session and it should never happen."
"Having said this, the car was consistent but there's still some room to find more pace for tomorrow. I think that the pace will be quick at the front this weekend, so we will need to make sure we can keep up," He added.
The Lansvale Racing Team,. Sydney's sole V8 Supercar Series representatives, will take to the track tomorrow for practice and qualifying and will compete in one race late tomorrow afternoon (Saturday), followed by two sprint races on Sunday to decide the third round of the nation's premier motor racing series.
