THE Century Batteries Australian GT Production Car Championship stages its 2000 grand final at Melbourne¹s Sandown International Raceway this weekend, with a near-record grid of 46 cars fighting to the end for the outright and five class titles.

Going into Sunday¹s round-eight races, the championship and each of the class contests remain winnable from behind, although some of the current points leaders would be unlucky to lose.

Queenslander Mark King, driving a Mitsubishi Lancer RS Evo V in which he has won seven times this season, is in the lead to wrap up the championship and the Autobarn High Performance class.

King heads both pointscores with a tally of 127, but with a maximum 31 points available to a driver who can take pole position and two race victories, the series¹ early leader Ric Shaw (Mazda RX-7) remains in striking distance from second on the ladder with 103.

Kosi Kalaitzidis needs to add just four points to his current tally of 164 to clinch the Poolrite Four-cylinder Touring class in his Proton Satria GTi, but Warren Millett (Holden Commodore SS) faces a bigger challenge to hold off James Philip (Ford Falcon XR8), their scores in the Pennzoil V8 Touring class closely matched at 126-119.

In Hippies Sports Touring, David Wood (Honda Integra Type R) leads Wayne Russell (BMW 323i) 171 points to 153 and in Pennzoil Six-cylinder Touring, Daryl Coon (Ford Falcon XR6) is ahead of Robert Chadwick (Mitsubishi Magna Sports), 172 to 152.
