CAMERON McLean limped to the finish of race two of the Clipsal 500 in 24th place in Adelaide today after a clash with another competitor suddenly ended hopes of a top 15 result.
After starting in 33rd position, McLean worked the V.I.P. Pet Foods Falcon steadily up through the field and by lap 68 was contesting 15th place with New Zealander Jason Richards.
"I had just passed Max Wilson and Paul Weel in one move and closed right up on Jason Richards going into turn six.
"He had been holding up our group and I was ready to make a dive for 15th. He should have given me room, but unfortunately we touched and it damaged the steering on the left side.
"I pitted and had a tie-rod bolt changed, but it took until four laps before the finish and I just nursed the car to the end hoping it wouldn't break again.
"It was a pity, because until then we had been making good progress. I had pitted on lap 55 mainly to get my drink bottle reconnected, but the guys also threw on a new set of rear tyres and we were heading for a strong finish.
"Adelaide doesn't seem to like us. We lost an engine in yesterday's race and that was the fourth year in a row we've had engine trouble."
McLean endured extreme conditions during the race. The track temperature hit 42 degrees and it was considerably hotter inside the Falcon.
"We didn't have enough insulation under my seat and occasionally I had to loosen my belts and wiggle around to ease the discomfort. If I hadn't stopped to have the drink hose reconnected I don't think I could have made it to the finish - I drank five litres in two hours."
