Volvo GRM driver Scott McLaughlin topped the first practice session of the 2016 V8 Supercars season on the streets of Adelaide.
The New Zealander first appeared near the top of the times at the midway point of the session, going P4 with a 1m21.871s. With nine minutes of the session remaining he improved to a 1m20.929s – the first sub-1m21s of the session – before going faster again right at the flag with a 1m20.788s to bag P1.
James Courtney was second fastest thanks to a lightning quick stint inside the last three minutes, his best time a 1m20.821s, while Craig Lowndes spent most of the session bogged in the midfield before popping up in third on his very last lap.
Shane van Gisbergen was the best of the Red Bull-backed cars in P4, ahead of Rick Kelly in the Nissan, and the Penske pair of Scott Pye and Fabian Coulthard.
Tim Slade led the way for Brad Jones Racing, with Michael Caruso and Garth Tander rounding out the Top 10.
It was a disappointing session for Prodrive – in terms of outright results, at least – with new signing Cam Waters the best-placed PRA Falcon in 19th. Reigning champion Mark Winterbottom was 20th fastest, with Chaz Mostert 22nd.
