Adrian Fernandez, owner and driver of Fernandez racing, stepped into unfamiliar territory today as he traded his single-seat Indy car for a customised V8 Super Tourer.

The 2000 Gold Coast race winner is making his ninth Champ Car start on the streets of Surfers Paradise, starting Friday.

But today Fernandez did several hot laps in an Australian Holden V8 (General Motors), skillfully manoeuvring the much heavier Sirromet car of local Gold Coast driver Paul Morris.

Tipping Australia as his favorite race of the season, Fernandez revelled in the experience of handling a 3000lb right-hand drive car, reaching top speeds of up to 200 mph along the back straight of the challenging Gold Coast track.

The Mexican driver said he was looking forward to showcasing the skills of the Fernandez Race Team this weekend, claiming the team had taken strong runs on the street circuits this season.
