Cat Racing's John Bowe will start from position ten when the V8 Supercar stars face the starter for round eight of the championship at Winton Motor Raceway in rural Victoria tomorrow.

Bowe had been strong in the morning practice sessions, setting the 5th fastest time in opening attack, and 2nd fastest in the final run.

However, despite improving nearly 4/10ths of a second during qualifying, Bowe was unable to match those efforts.

Bowe was ninth after the qualifying session for the fastest 50% of the field, but was knocked back one spot after Greg Murphy grabbed 3rd position from the slowest 50% session.

"Our car doesn't seem to respond to new tyres as well as some of our competitors," Bowe said.

"Once you start a hot lap on fresh tyres, the car starts to go loose in the rear half-way through the lap.

"In some of the slow corners, it also doesn't put its power down as well as I would like."

With the Winton circuit being used by a number of local Victorian teams as a test venue, Bowe's ninth position marks him as the fastest of the non-regular Winton runners.

The drivers from the FTR, HRT, K-Mart and Valvoline teams filled the top nine spots.

Ford driver Glenn Seton grabbed pole position, the first pole for Ford since Bathurst last year.

"Our car is not too bad in race trim but we need to do some homework to improve our qualifying speed," Bowe said.

"They have moved the start-line this year to in front of the new pit facilities which should help minimise some of the first corner carnage.

"There is a longer run down to turn one which should the give the guys a little more time to sort themselves out.

"My aim tomorrow will be to keep my nose clean in the first race and pull out a good solid finish.

"Our day has been ruined in the past three rounds of the championship by being caught up in drama in the opening race.

"The car was been really strong in fighting through the pack, but I'd much rather get a good solid result in the opening race and work on it from there."
