V8 SUPERCAR SHELL CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES PREVIEW WINTON MOTOR RACEWAY
NEW FORTUNES THE TARGET FOR BOWE'S FAVOURITE V8 TRACK
John Bowe may have won two of the past four V8 Supercar rounds staged at Winton in rural Victoria but the Cat Racing star is simply hoping for a change of luck this weekend.
The fierce action of the V8 Supercar ranks has turned against Bowe in recent weeks.
For the past three races, the Cat Racing Falcon has been a regular visitor to the paint shop after being punted off the road - the last time in spectacular fashion when a hit in the right rear quarter panel sent him careering off the circuit at full speed at Queensland Raceway.
Bowe finished 4th at the Clipsal 500 and Eastern Creek rounds of the championship and is now aiming to recapture that form with a strong performance in qualifying at Winton.
"We didn't get the best of the new tyres in the qualifying session at Queensland Raceway and that put us in 11th and back amongst all the action," Bowe said.
"The further back you are, the more likelihood there is of being caught up in somebody else's mess.
"Winton has been very kind to me in the past but that doesn't mean anything this weekend.
"We have to work very hard to ensure we are in the first couple of rows for the opening race."
Bowe qualified 5th at Winton last year in the Cat Falcon, only to join half a dozen leading cars which slid off the circuit after a backmarker dropped fluid and dragged mud onto the circuit before the fast left hand sweeper.
"It seemed like the whole field fell off here last year which was a bit of a freak circumstance but I am pretty confident we should be strong this weekend," Bowe said.
"The Winton layout is pretty tight, but I really enjoy the circuit.
"Despite being punted off in the last round, we still showed our car was pretty strong. Our lap times at the end of the last race didn't really drop off which is a good sign.
"You really need a car that turns in well and puts its power down in the slow corners at Winton.
"A lot of local Victorian teams test at this circuit which could provide them with an advantage but I'm confident our luck is about to turn."
