Cat Racing's John Bowe and Simon Wills came within one lap of climbing the podium after a brilliant effort in today's VIP Pet Foods Queensland 500.

Bowe and Wills ran in the top six for most of the day and were sitting in fourth place with about ten laps to go when light rain began to fall at Queensland Raceway.

With the third placed car more than 30 seconds up the road, the rain began to fall heavier, forcing many of the leading teams to pit for wet tyres.

The Cat squad "rolled the dice" to stay out on slicks, only for the rain to hit heavier, forcing the car off the road and into a sandtrap.

The race was red flagged one lap later, leaving the #600 car of Bowe and Wills out of the top placings despite running strongly all day.

"To be perfectly honest, I am pretty shattered, but it was better to have a go at the podium and fall short - rather than just settle for fourth," Bowe said.

"The car had a bit of understeer through turn two all day, but other than that, it was brilliant.

"Simon did a great job and I am really proud of the whole team.

"If the weather had changed slightly, we could have even won it.

"That is the problem - we could have pitted for wets and settled for fourth but we came here to race and the podium was our aim.

"If the rain had stopped, we would have looked like experts - but that is the way it goes."

Wills was disappointed to have a podium spot snatched away at the last minute, but was thrilled with the performance of the Briggs Motorsport built machine.

"It was pretty exciting at the pits at the finish, but we were unlucky with the weather," Wills said.

"The car was brilliant today and I really enjoyed my stint.

"We gave it our best shot and certainly showed the car should be very strong at Bathurst."
