V8 Supercar Shell Championship Series
Qualifying Round Twelve New Zealand
Strong Effort From Wills In Solo V8 Supercar Debut
Simon Wills made a strong start to his solo V8 Supercar career in New Zealand today, qualifying 13th for round twelve of the Shell Championship Series at Auckland's Pukekohe Park Raceway.
Driving the Cat Racing Ford Falcon, Wills was inside the top ten in the dying moments of qualifying but was unable to improve at the very end of the session.
As the times tumbled, Wills finished in 13th spot - amongst a group of six Fords which filled positions 10 through 15.
While the Brisbane-based driver has contested championship rounds previously at two-driver events such as the Queensland 500 and V8 Supercar 1000 at Bathurst - this will be the first time he has had the sole driving duties in a title round.
"We were losing a bit of time coming across the hill near the pits and that is effecting our straight line speed," Wills said.
"The car has a little bit of understeer and I am unable to get on the throttle as early as I would like. We have tried a number of changes to try change the handling characteristics, but nothing has worked so far.
"We will try a few more changes tomorrow to see if we can improve the car.
"In the race it may not be such a bad thing, because the understeer should turn to oversteer when the fuel load drops and the tyres start to wear."
Greg Murphy recorded the fasted time in qualifying today ahead of Mark Skaife and Marcos Ambrose.
The V8 Supercars will battle it out for a top-ten shoot-out tomorrow before tackling the first race at 4.00pm - followed by two races on Sunday.
"I am really looking forward to the races and I remain really confident we can do well," Wills said.
"The start is going to interesting because turn two here is really a single file corner and we will have 30 cars fighting it out for an early advantage." <pre> QUALIFYING 1. - Greg Murphy (Holden) - 56.959 2. - Mark Skaife (Holden) - 57.013 3. - Marcos Ambrose (Ford) - 57.081 4. - Jason Bright (Holden) - 57.104 5. - Larry Perkins (Holden) - 57.289 6. - Todd Kelly (Holden) - 57.317 7. - Craig Lowndes (Ford) - 57.403 8. - Glenn Seton (Ford) - 57.474 9. - Russel Ingall (Holden) - 57.481 10. - Steve Ellery (Ford) - 57.557 11. - David Besnard (Ford) - 57.568 12. - Paul Radisich (Ford) - 57.612 13. - SIMON WILLS (CAT FORD) - 57.618 14. - Steven Johnson (Ford) - 57.629 15. - Steven Richards (Ford) - 57.670
