V8 Supercar Shell Championship Series Preview Round One Phillip Island
After a strong debut in new colours for 2001 at the Australian Grand Prix, Cat Racing star John Bowe has his sights set on another top performance at the opening round of the Shell Championship Series this weekend at Phillip Island.
The Phillip Island weekend is the first to feature the revised championship format for 2001, with two 100km races with pit stops held on Sunday. This format will be repeated at several meetings throughout the season.
Bowe is looking forward to the challenge of one of Australia's fastest circuits this weekend.
"It has a brilliant mix of corners and is very fast. It is extremely rewarding to get a good lap done here," Bowe said.
"The best part of the track is coming onto the straight. Getting a good run here can really set up your lap.
"Peeling off into the right hander at the end of the straight is also very rewarding, and extremely quick.
"You are also on maximum throttle here for a great majority of the lap.
"Unfortunately, the Island does suffer from some extremes in weather. When it is cold and wet here, it is just terrible. But that is all part of the challenge of the place."
After a strong conistent run at Australian Grand Prix, Bowe is confident of continuing this speed at the opening round of the championship this weekend.
"The Grand Prix weekend was quite positive for us and the entire team is very keen to do well," Bowe said.
"We were all disappointed with how last year went, but we are much better prepared for 2001.
"The old car showed up well at Albert Park and we have a new car on the way which will hopefully be ready for Eastern Creek.
"The V8 Supercar championship is now very competitive and you constantly have to move forward to keep on the pace.
"Our aim is to keep out of trouble finish the weekend with a strong points haul."
